AN ADVENTOUROS SONIFICATION OF CREDIT CARD DATA
How does a financial institution sound? Are credit cards musical instruments? Can a bank account be an experimental sound source? This installation reflects on these questions and uses the electronic information on credit cards as a source for experimental sound explorations. The fragile design and feeble construction is a comment on the supposed quality of intelligent systems that in fact are very vulnerable to malicious intends and influenceable by human biases.
The installation transforms credit card data into a noisy sound language. It sonifies data into an unexpected soundscape. Electromagnetic information on credit cards is brought to life by sliding them along tape heads from modified radio cassette players. Credit cards produce sound because the black stripe on the back of a credit card stores data the same way that audio tapes do.
